Chem problem: Gas law?
In a diesel engine the fuel is ignited when it is injected into hot compressed air, heated by the compression itself. In a typical high-speed diesel engine, the chamber in the cylinder has a diameter of 10.7 cm and a length of 13.4 cm. On compression, the length of the chamber is shortened by 12.7 cm (a “5-inch stroke”). The compression of the air changes its pressure from 1.00 to 38.7 atm. The temperature of the air before compression is 322 K. As a result of the compression, the final air temperature will be _____________ K just before the fuel injection.

V1 = A*(13.4cm)
V2 = A*(13.4cm-12.7cm) = A*(0.7cm)
P1=1.00atm
P2=38.7atm
T1=322
P1 V1/T1 = P2 V2/T2
T2 = T1*(P2/P1)*(V2/V1)
T2 = 322*(38.7/1.00)*((A*0.7)/(A*13.4)) = 651 K
Ans: 651 K
